Antoine van Agtmael

Antoine van Agtmael, the man who coined the term “Emerging Markets” and ran his own firm, Emerging Markets Management, has shifted his focus recently to the U.S., more specifically the Rust Belt. He is working on a book titled "Back in Business: From Rustbelt to Brainbelt" which will be published in June 2014.

Mr. Antoine van Agtmael is Senior Advisor at Garten Rothkopf. Prior to joining Garten Rothkopf, he was the principal founder, CEO and CIO of Emerging Markets Management LLC (and later chairman of AshmoreEMM), a leading investment management firm for emerging market equities.  He was also a founding director of the Strategic Investment Group.  Before founding EMM in 1987, Mr. van Agtmael was Deputy Director of the Capital Markets department of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), where he coined the term “emerging markets.” He was also a Division Chief in the World Bank's borrowing operations, Managing Director of Thailand's leading merchant bank TISCO, and Vice President at Bankers Trust Company. 

Mr. van Agtmael is the author of numerous articles and books, including The Emerging Markets Century (2007), Emerging Securities Markets (1984); he is also co-editor of The World's Emerging Stock Markets (1992). He was an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law Center and taught at the Harvard Institute of Politics and Thammasat University, Bangkok. He holds an MBA from New York University, an MA in Russian and Eastern European Studies from Yale University, and a BA in Economics from the Netherlands School of Economics.

He is Chairman of the NPR Foundation, a member of the board of NPR and chairman of its Investment Committee. He is also a Trustee of The Brookings Institution and Co-Chairman of its International Advisory Council, and sits on the President’s Council on International Activities at Yale University and the Smithsonian Institution's Freer and Sackler Galleries Board.
